Milk Raku
UNEARTHING PREHISTORIC HERITAGE THROUGH ALTERNATIVE POTTERY TECHNIQUES ON THE CAUSEWAY COAST
Half day Milk Raku
An ancient technique of sealing pottery with a fermented brew.
Originating in eastern Europe this method has reaches back to neolithic pottery were traces of milk lipids have been found on the surface of ceramic shards. Today this method has evolved into an aesthetic activity; Also known as Obvara firing, this creates amazing volcanic type surfaces!
Patricia's rural studio is located on the edge of a village called Lisnagunogue which translates as "Fort of the churns" referencing its ancient origins as a bronze age dairy settlement. This tradition continues today with many of the local farms still milking cattle.
Milk raku seems a natural process to include at this rural pottery studio.
